Don't mix Mincho and Gothic! I thought

Hey there, I'm Tocoton, a design shop in Minami, Osaka.
Although I didn't go to design school, I have been working in design for 18 years, and there are certain rules for both web and DTP (paper design). It is my own assumption, but I think there are more rules in DTP than in Web. I think there are more rules in DTP than in Web. But I recently learned something different. The other day, I was reading a magazine called "Ipponjin," and the headline of a photo that appeared in the magazine jumped out at me. For a moment, I felt something strange. It took me three seconds to realize that it was a mixture of Gothic and Mincho typefaces. It took me three seconds to notice. Of course I felt something strange, so I thought it was strange for a moment, but not so strange that I couldn't bear to read it. I assumed and thought it was a rule, but then I realized that it was okay to mix them up.

The way you mix styles, the way you mix fonts, is original.

I found out that there is no absolute rule, but rather a method of mixing styles and fonts that has been around for a long time. However, it is said that it is "natural" for most people to design with a sense of unity, which is why there were few people who did it. There are always majorities and minorities. However, there were some designs that mixed fonts by using Mincho for headlines and Gothic for sentences in paragraphs, but it is unusual to mix Gothic and Mincho in the same headline, as "Ippanjin(mazagine title)" did this time. That is why I thought it was impressive and interesting.

The effect of mixing the two, in my opinion, is that the block type (especially Kanji) stands out and the word itself seems to stand out. That makes it easier for that word to remain as an image in my head, so it might be good for leaving an impression. My partner clearly said that he doesn't like this approach because it is very hard to read and hurts the eyes, but I think it depends on each person. Yes, if you overdo it, it could be like a threatening letter. In terms of being impressive, though, we have that in common.
Points to keep in mind while creating without being bound by rules.

When designing, it is important to consider what the design is for, what the purpose is, and who the viewers are. I know that! I think, "I know that," but it is very difficult. In fact, since I turned 40, I have become more conscious of font size and color contrast than ever before. Why? Because it is hard to see. I often find when I am in the "minority" in many designs that it is very hard to just look stylish. Rather, when that happens, it's an opportunity! So, how do you make a design that has large letters and some contrast, but still looks fashionable? Design is fun because you can go about it with something in mind. Design is not just about looking good; it is about conveying information and bringing comfort to the user and viewer. That is how we at design shop Tocoton see it. If mixing fonts in the same text is effective and necessary, we would love to do it.
